Lesson 3

A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, for, not, or, so, yet).

Turn each simple sentence below into a compound sentence.

1 We ate lunch. 

We ate lunch but I did not like the food.

2 The rocket flew high.

The rocket flew high and I could not see it.

3 Emily sang a song.

Emily sang a song but she didn’t like the song.

4 The goldfish swims in the pond.

The goldfish swims in the pond but the pond is dirty.

5 The party was fun.

The party was fun so I didn’t want to leave.

6 On Wednesday Peter put his hand up in class.

On Wednesday Peter put his hand up in class and the teacher chose him to answer a question.

7 Bert likes fruit for breakfast.

Bert likes fruit for breakfast but this morning he ate cereal.

8 What is your favourite colour?

My favourite colour is peach and my second favourite colour is aqua.
